Where we are: home

Home. Now that's a word that has become all so important to us in past weeks, and a destination we're glad to have reached. We had an unforgettable time on the road, catching up with old friends, and making new. Introducing Sofie to the public, and revisiting our previous books with longtime fans. Seeing inspiring sights and places we would never have otherwise viewed.

But wait...

We can't say a final farewell to this travel BLOG just yet. Not with photos from The Last Chapter and Jane Schaumberg and her gang still outstanding.

So please come back to see those and to read our final thoughts on this tour and our best and worst list of places we visited!

TTFN!

Where we are: Osseo/Minneapolis, MN
What we're listening to: local radio program on the Vikings stadium

This was *the* perfect place for the final stop of our tour! Owners of A Novel Place Marcy and Kevin Rebman were so welcoming and friendly we wished they lived next door to us rather than a twelve-hour drive away. What fantastic people! And not just to us. They are a real asset to their community on so many levels and inspired us to make it a point to get more involved in ours in the future.

One of their many endeavors is a cable show called"Let's Talk Books!" that Marcy hosts and Kevin and Dave produce and direct right there in the store! We were honored to tape an episode with them during our visit.

Please check them out on the web at http://www.anovelplace.com/. You'll be glad you did!

Thanks, guys! Not just for your kindness and friendship, but for helping us wrap up our tour in the best of all possible ways.

Where we are: Minneapolis, MN
What we're listening to: Savage World (What a piece of work! Who *is* this guy?)

Tomorrow marks the official end to our tour. Incredible! Have two months really passed since we first launched this spectacular trip across these wonderful United States?

We get into the Twin Cities area late last night, a half-day earlier than planned, and have a hard time getting a room for the night because of a well-attended softball tournament. We finally land a room at Country Inn and Suites (what a great new chain!), and catch up on our sleep so we can spend today exploring this stretch of the Mississippi River.

If you're ever in the area, the waterfront is a definite must! From Mill Ruins Park, to Anthony Falls right there in middle of the river, we're taken with the cities' humble yet important history. So peaceful and clean and welcoming, we enjoy this day off walking and chatting and discussing what comes next after tomorrow's signing at A Novel Place and PBS appearance.

And what does come next? Well, you'll just have to stay tuned to see...<g><g><g>

Where we are: Kansas City, MO
What we're listening to: Dr Laura

Apropos, I think, that our second to last signing on this gigantic cross-country tour is at The Last Chapter! Tragic that we forget our digital camera back at our hotel room while downloading the shots from yesterday's signing. MARA prez Cheryl Rabin saves our arses by coming up with an extra disposable camera for us to use (what are the chances of that?!).

Owner Jane Schaumberg and her cohorts-in-crime Amy, Hazel and Vickie are more than fantastic! Baklava from a nearby Greek restaurant is laid out (nearly as good as Tony's!), and a nice audience is waiting for us to entertain them with our road stories. What a great group! The atmosphere feels more like a relaxed chat with friends than any sort of official appearance. Kathy and her husband Tom have traveled from their bookstore in the Ozarks for a visit (okay, they also have fam in the area, but we're tickled they come out and have us sign several copies of our books for their store). We thoroughly enjoy meeting and chatting with Cheryl and Merma and Rosemarie (a fellow Greek!), and Lisa and Annette and Dick and...the list goes on!

Thank you, thank you, and thank you again, Jane, for making this, one of the final stops on our tour, a memorable and special experience.

Where we are: Colorado Springs, CO
What we're listening to: our CD of Greek singer Karras

We've seen so many wonderful sights during this tour, and the stretch between Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs is one of our favorites. I've commented on Wyoming before, so I won't go into detail here, but we take a secondary route from Laramie to Denver that leaves us speechless. So much rugged, beautiful territory. The spaghetti westerns from Tony's youth spring to life all around us (even though most of those were actually filmed in Italy<vbg>)...

We check into our hotel five minutes away from Beth Anne's Book Shop the night before our signing and catch up on some much needed sleep. Later, while I format some of the countless photos we snapped during the RWA conference, Tony meets and chats outside with families from neighboring rooms that are outside catching a bit of fresh air. Seems there are three major bases in the Springs area and is the point where many of those serving overseas are scheduled to come home for a visit. Everywhere there are men and women in uniform and anxious and happy families looking forward to seeing them, if only for a short time.

The following morning we drive to Beth Anne's and are bowled over by the woman of the same name, along with her son Marty and reader and new writer Carol, as well as coworker Debbie. Time for a brief chat before Beth Anne is whisking us out for lunch along with Carol, to a Greek-Mexican restaurant, no less, that she hasn't tried yet but the place ends up serving not only authentic Greek food, but excellent Greek food.

We're enjoying ourselves so much time slips away from us and we nearly forget we're supposed to be signing at the store. But as Beth Anne points out, they can't start without us - lol!

We love, love, love this woman and her cozy bookstore and look forward to coming back, hopefully very soon!

Where we are: Murray/Salt Lake City, Utah
What we're listening to: local station on Mormonism (fascinating!)

What a beautiful city! While nowhere near as large as we expected, Salt Lake City is absolutely breathtaking. With magestic mountains (one's called Mount Olympus, no less), protecting the city valley like handsome sentinels, you feel safe in this place in the middle of nowhere. Tony takes countless pictures that we'll have to compile and share sometime.

We arrive at the Murray Borders and wonderful Gail immediately greets us, along with Lynda (aka Nancy -- inside joke), who's originally from Brooklyn. It is Sunday in Salt Lake City, so we don't expect much traffic. Did you know that the church services here run around 3 1/2 hours and are tiered throughout the day? What amazing dedication! So we take full advantage of the op to get to know Gail, Lynda, Cammie, Taran and Nathan, as well as Robin and Lisa. What a great bunch of people! Open and friendly and welcoming.

We find out that there are two Greek churches in Salt Lake, and copy down suggestions for Greek restaurants, although we unfortunately won't have an op to visit any this trip because we'll be making a run for our next signing in Colorado Springs immediately following the signing.

Ah, yes. This is definitely a place we look forward to revisiting in the future and getting to know better; both the city and the people. Thanks, guys!

Still in Reno...however briefy!

We're scheduled to hit the road early this afternoon for our Sunday signing in Salt Lake City (we hate that we're going to miss the Awards ceremony! So many of our dear friends are up for awards and we want to cheer them on!). The perfect start to our last conference day is coffee and a bite with longtime friend and Harelquin editorial dir Randall Toye. Usually he and Tony meet up for an early morning walk at conferences like these, but this time we arrange a meeting that doesn't include walking on my painfully abused feet so I can come, too! We enjoy catching up, reluctant to part so he can participate in a Spotlight on Harlequin workshop and so we can rush to our hotel to check out.

Before we leave, we get a chance to catch up with dear Friend Barb Hicks, whom we haven't seen a lot of this conf, as well as Kristin Painter, two of our favorite people.

But we're not done yet! While Elvis II is packed and fueled and ready to go, we need to do one more thing to top off a perfectly wonderful conference experience, and that's meet Tor editors and pals Anna Genoese and Natasha Panza for lunch at Chevy's. Natasha just learned at the conference that she's been promoted from editorial assistant to editor (yes!!!), so we celebrate and enjoy these wonderful women's company until the time comes when we finally must part.

Ah, yes. Perfect.

We can't wait for next year's conference in Atlanta!

Since there are so many pics from the RWA Conference, we've created a separate album.

Still in Reno...
What we're watching: the space shuttle's important mission

This morning is our workshop, "Go For It! Taking risks with your career and your writing." Okay, from here on in we have to decide which route we're going to take when it comes to workshops: prepared safe speech we stick to, or free-for-all that's not taped. Since this is being taped, we step away from the mic several times to share items that, well, are better off not shared with the world. Not because the info is innacurate or catty, but because it directly relates to our own personal experiences and, well, may not be exactly politically correct.

Afterward we run into Christine Feehan's wonderful husband Richard and her two daughters Domini and Denise in the main lobby bar and we get a chance to play catch up before they go in to lunch. We love this family! They're all so friendly and generous and inclusive and feel so much like...well, a part of our family.

Shortly thereafter Robert finishes up a business lunch and joins us. Talk about feeling like family! We love that we're given an unparalleled opportunity to enjoy Robert as a friend during this conference. After a dry turn at the roulette wheel, we all head for the one-arm bandits, where gorgeous (inside and out) Leanne Banks visits with us all for awhile and where Robert can't seem to lose. Ultimately he has to leave for a meeting and turns his machine over to Tony, who continues the winning streak. (Thanks for another great lunch, Robert! lol)

Afterward we head to the Spotlight On Tor/Forge, where eds Anna Genoese and Natasha Panza do a fantabulous job of sharing all the great titles the house offers, including SOFIE!

While we haven't been able to attend any of our adoptive RWA Orange County Chapter's official events, we head up to their suite where we enjoy a brief visit with Michelle and Lana and several other fellow chapter members. (We'll be paying them a more lengthy visit on their home turf next June! Stay tuned for details.)

A brief nap and a change of clothes and we're ready for the Harlequin Party at the Peppermill. Or think we're ready. Can anyone really be ready for one of these events? They really outdo themselves this year with a chocolate lover's dream of a desert buffet and open bar and a great DJ who has everyone up and dancing. Joanna and Christine and Peter are there to record goings on for the Bravo documentary, and we get to catch up with Brenda Chin and Birgit David-Todd and Loriana Sacolitto and Isabel Swift and Randall Toye
and K.O. and Heather Graham and her dh Dennis and daughter Bryee-Anon and Jo Carol and Lucienne Diver and Terri Medeiros and Jacquie D and Dee Davis and Julie Kenner and Heather Rae and Jayne and...the list goes on! We love the two houses we write for and enjoy the opportunity to kick back and have a great time with everyone. I even get Joanna and Christine up for a dance and Stephanie Bond steals Tony for another.

Again, we chalk up another great day filled with wonderful memories.

Since there are so many pics from the RWA Conference, we've created a separate album.

Where we are: Reno Hilton
What's on tap: BRAVO documentary taping; lunch with The Robert; Trident Party; Blaze Party

This day was so packed full of events we were committed to attending that we knew something would have to give. So please let me to apologize to the hosts of the Simply Fabulous party, the OCC get-together, and to Brenda Chin for arriving at the sizzling Blaze party late.

Okay, now that I've revealed what we missed, let me tell you what we hit...

First off, we're set to go before the Bravo romance documentary cameras at ten, so we arrive at the Hilton (yes, because of the Express accident and high conference attendance we didn't stay at the Hilton) at around nine. Tony's relaxed and ready, I'm so nervous my hands are shaking. I know, I know, I probably shouldn't have been so anxious, but I was. And, of course, I then was able to share a bit of that with our Harlequin ed Brenda Chin who was doing a piece with us on author-editor relations before the camera would be turned on Tony and I as a team. Brenda had thought the meeting was another pre-interview sans camera. We corrected her and she and I just kind of sat there in a state of terror. A state that wasn't helped by longtime bud Vicki Lewis Thompson when she finished with her bit and came out and sat with us, sharing how she didn't think she'd done well (I'm sure she was fabulous!).

Finally the time comes and we're squeezed into a booth, Brenda in between us, bright lights shined on us from all angles, and Elmo the fuzzy mic hovering above our heads. For as nervous as Brenda was, I was fascinated by the way she rose to the occasion and completely commanded the interview, turning me into a viewer rather than a participant so that when I was asked a question I'd forgotten I was supposed to speak!

Joanna D'Angelo and Christine Alexiou and cameraman Peter were great. Well, until they asked Tony and I to kiss on camera. And since the first one apparently wasn't good enough, they asked us to kiss again. Tony, apparently, had warmed up to the entire prospect and actually slipped me tongue. Yikes! Please, please, guys, don't use that one!

Joanna and Christine head to NYC next for an interview with Kathryn Falk and Romantic Times among others, so we'll keep you posted on air dates. Although I'm not entirely sure I want to see it. LOL!

Feeling a bit shell-shocked, we head back out to the bar where we run into probably the perfect person at that moment: Jenny Crusie. Talk about someone capable of immediately putting things into perspective. And, of course, we finally get the chance to meet her newly acquired collaborator Bob Mayer. Their first book together, Don't Look Down, is due out May 2006 and we can't wait to read it. We swap war stories and laughs.

We have a 1 p.m. lunch scheduled with our agents Robert Gottlieb and Jenny Bent of Trident Media Group so we don't plan to go far. Only we don't anticipate running into Robert a full hour before our lunch, so Tony goes off with him to play some roulette (or rather, Tony goes to watch Robert play with the same finesse he employs on the job -- yes, that means he came out a big winner!). Afterward, Jenny joins us and we enjoy a great Japanese lunch that is more about pleasure than business.

Since we're meeting Harlequin special projects editor Alethea Spiridon at four, we decide to scratch our usual siesta and stick around the lobby where we catch up with many conference buds, including Friends Joni, Heather, Lynda and Amelia.

Ah, Alethea. She worked with us on our Signature titles earlier this year and was our lifeline while we were in Greece last October trying to put together the bonus features for the same titles. We enjoy coffee with her where we trade stories about our Greek relatives and laugh a lot.

Six-thirty brings the Trident Media Group Authors and Editors Party. What a spread! But then again we expect no less from our agent Robert Gottlieb and his fellow literary goddesses. Straight out of the gate we get the chance to catch up with Jim and Nikoo McGoldrick (who write as May McGoldrick and Jan Coffey), another husband-and-wife team and a great couple! Stephanie Bond is also there, as is Karen Kendall, and Dee Davis and Leanne Banks and...well, the list of talent goes on. We enjoy catching up with agent Kim Whalen, and later in the evening Robert entertains us with jokes that leave us all in stitches.

Afterward is another try at the roulette wheel before we bid Robert a fond goodnight, then Tony and I head up to the Blaze party, which serves as double duty as author Cara Summers birthday party and a celebration for Brenda's having won PASIC Editor of the Year! We're not there ten minutes before hotel security pays a visit asking the group to keep it down. Complete silence as Brenda handles them, then a loud "Book 'em, Danno," comes from the back of the room from Tony, nearly causing Birgit to faint dead out. LOL! Ten minutes later the officers are called back again and we all reluctantly call it a night.

Nope, there were no fire alarm mishaps (long story), but this experience certainly rates up there as a close and fun second.

Tony and I are still wound up and not quite ready to call it a night so we head for the nickle slot machines to find Mira editor Diane Moggy calling it quits, and HQN ed Tracey Farrell giving the one-arm bandits a shot. I win a bit, catch a few minutes of a great cover band in the bar, until finally we bid adieu to a busy and happy day.

Since there are so pics many from the RWA Conference, we've created a separate album.

Where we are: RWA's Literacy Signing

This annual event is always a bit overwhelming. So many authors in such a huge place. Friends, acquaintances and others with the potential to be either or both. We're running a little late -- as usual -- and no sooner get to our table when the nonstop stream of the above begins. Forge has donated two cases of Sofie, and Harlequin many copies of our Signature titles, and we're afraid that with all the other authors there that there's no way we're going to sell them all. Surprise of surprises, we nearly sell every last one! Perhaps partly due to a review featured in last Sunday's Reno Gazette-Tribune (we haven't gotten a hold of a copy yet; a local librarian shared the great news when she came by for a copy of Sofie). In fact, we end up being late for dinner with our Harlequin editor Brenda Chin because we don't have a chance to pack up and go (we were due to meet her at 7:45, and were still signing at 8:15).

In a word...wow! Thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you to everyone for stopping by. Not only for picking up copies of our books, but donating the monies from the same to a very good cause.

Afterward, we caught up with Brenda and Stephanie Bond Hauck and Colleen Collins at the hotel steakhouse and enjoyed a leisurely meal. Of course, we closed the place down. Hmm...why is it we always end up doing that?<g><g><g>

We finally get up to the Ex-Rom party at sometime after 11 to find Jill Barnett, Pam Baker and Melissa the last ones in the suite. We share some laughs and play catch up then we all agree that it's probably a good idea if we call it a night.

Since there are so pics many from the RWA Conference, we've created a separate album.

Where we are: Reno!
What we're watching: a documentary on how to beat the slots

We're here, we're here! Of course, we're not at the conference hotel, but at another about a mile up the road, so we can't just pop downstairs to see what all's going on. Ugh! But we're here and in mere moments we're going to be seeing all our buds and yours. Woohoo!

Amazing that we were absolutely dead when we arrived at midnight last night. Traveling through eight states and three time zones in a little over two days will do that to a body. But after a good night's rest, we're ready and raring to go.

Can't wait to post pics to share! Just a few smiling postcards from us to you to say how much we wish y'all were here.

Stay tuned...

Where we are: Rock Springs, Wyoming
What we're listening to: Norah Jones

I would never have imagined a place could smell like oatmeal cookies. But when we awakened at five a.m. this morning just short of the Wyoming border in Nebraska, I swear I was looking to follow my nose to Grandma's oven. Only neither of my grandmothers, rest their souls, ever made oatmeal cookies, and there was no oven or bakery anywhere to be found here. Only endless rolling hills and skies.

Of course, I probably could have done with a couple of hours more sleep. But Tony panicked when he saw that his watch read 7:00 a.m. By the time reality had seeped through our sleep-muddled brains that we'd crossed two time zones and that it was actually 5:00 a.m., we'd already had the bed made up, the coffee poured from the thermos, and were back on the road again. Yeesh.

That's all right. This run for Reno is our most ambitious yet. A whopping 2200 miles in just over two days. We drove for a full fifteen hours yesterday, stopping at a state park in Iowa for a couple of hours for an spontaneous picnic to absorb the lush, green hills and to enjoy the brief break in the heat. We shot for Cheyenne, but fell just short, instead stopping for the night just inside Nebraska after a freak storm we later found out included the touchdown of a tornado nearby. Yikes!

Did I mention the heat? All I've got to say is that must have been one helluva a downpour because we woke up to 50 degree weather and through Wyoming they're calling for temps no higher than 65. Considering we were gasping our way through 105 degree heat yesterday, well, the turnaround is nothing if not noteworthy. Did I bring long sleeve shirts for us? No, of course, I didn't. But since we're in the car it really doesn't matter.

We've been through beautiful Iowa and Nebraska before, but southern Wyoming is a first for us. Wow! Absolutely breathtaking, even with the overcast sky. Or perhaps because of it. Cattle and horses roaming over wide expanses that stretch as far as the eye can see. Tony spots a pack of coyotes while I point out prairie dogs and antelope. I'd love to see an eagle, but I'm thinking they're a little farther to the north. It also bothers us that Yellowstone is so close, but it might as well be half a world away because if we hope to make it in time for the literacy signing in Reno tomorrow afternoon, well, there are no scenic routes or detours this trip.

There have been many surprises during this tour, and this is another of them. I don't know, I didn't expect Wyoming to be so...rugged somehow. It's almost as if the area's still in the process of being settled; it doesn't take much imagination to envision stage coaches pulling to a stop, or the Union Pacific Railroad chugging into a station, bringing settlers to the New Frontier. In the mesas in Rock Springs it eerily seems like the faces of the Native Americans who once lay claim to this land are etched into the red rock.

We're definitely coming back here at some point in the future. Hopefully in the Express II. And hopefully to stay long enough to thoroughly absorb everything that is Wyoming...
